Requirements to Get Transcription Jobs at Tigerfish Transcribing

• Tigerfish does NOT require previous transcription experience and accepts beginners.
• You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
• You must pass their tests. You’ll need to transcribe three short audio files. The most important key to getting hired is to follow their test guidelines and produce accurate transcripts. Your accuracy is more important than your speed to pass the tests.
• They want fast typists with strong English and grammar skills.
• They are looking for people with a broad range of interests (literature, art, science and business) and education and will ask information about your educational background, relevant experience and interests.
• They recommend using a high-quality headset and foot pedal.
• You can use Express Scribe (free) to do the test but you’ll need to purchase Start-Stop Power Play transcription software when you get hired. The software costs around $229. This is not a scam. You don't need to buy the software from them but you need to use that software when working for them. The Start-Stop PowerPlay video is great transcription software to transcribe video and audio. You can also use it for any other transcription work you do. The only place where I've seen the software for sale is at https://www.startstop.com/.
• You need a Windows computer.
• Go to the application page, read their style guide, do the test and provide some information about your experience and interests.

Overview

• They have many different types of transcription work available, including focus groups, interviews, law enforcement and documentaries.
• They hire sporadically.
• If you do well on the tests, they will contact you when they are hiring. It might take a while before you hear back from them after taking the test and you may not hear back from them if failed the tests.
• Sometimes they have a lot of work available and other times they only have a few files.
• They offer a flexible schedule.

Pay

• They don’t mention pay rates until you apply. But my research indicates they are paying around $.005 per word transcribed. Unlike most other transcription companies, they pay by words transcribed — not by audio time.
• They often offer time and a half for rush work.
• Their pay is significantly higher than companies like Quicktate and Scribie but a bit lower than other transcription companies.
• One person mentioned that she was making about $15 per hour. Most beginners will likely make less (probably more like $7-$10/hour) until their speed increases.

My comments

• Tigerfish Transcribing is an established transcription company and a good company to work for.
• Their tests are NOT easy and include a focus group. Focus groups are more difficult, involve multiple people, and people may be talking at the same time. Each test should take you about 20 minutes. You should be able to transcribe a 2.5 minute focus group audio in 15-20 minutes.
• I recommend acquiring some transcription experience and building up your speed before applying with them.
