If you have good typing and computer skills you’ve probably wondered how you can use those skills to work from home.
Below I’m mentioning legitimate companies that provide typing work from home.
Online typing jobs from home include data entry jobs, transcription, captioning, catcha input, and online chat agent jobs. You can also become a virtual assistant and offer typing and data entry work to your own clients.
Online Data Entry Jobs
If you have good keyboarding skills, you may want to consider online data entry work. When doing data entry work, you use computers and data processing programs to enter data or information into a database or platform. You may also enter data from recordings (transcribing).
The main requirements to do data entry work are computer and typing skills. It’s important to be accurate.
Data entry jobs can be part-time, temporary, or freelance jobs. Online data entry jobs and data entry jobs from home are different from data entry jobs done in an office. Job titles of people who perform data entry include data processors, typists, word processors, transcribers, coders, and clerks.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Data entry jobs performed in an office pay $16/hour on average.
But work-from-home data entry jobs often pay less than the minimum wage. Online data entry jobs typically pay on a per-piece basis so you need to be fast to make decent money.
Avoid data entry scams
Unfortunately, many fall prey to misleading ads promising you to make money with at-home typing work or data entry work. But despite the many work-at-home typing scams that are on the Internet, there are many legitimate ways you can use your typing and computer skills to make money from home. Any typing job or data entry job that promises high pay is most likely a scam. You can read my blog post to find out how to avoid data entry scams here.
Legitimate Data Entry Jobs from Home
One way to find online data entry jobs is by looking through freelance sites. See my large list of the best freelance sites here.
FlexJobs is a job search board that specializes in listing remote, freelance, flexible work-from-home jobs and freelance work. FlexJobs posts legitimate data entry jobs almost every day. Every position posted at FlexJobs has been thoroughly vetted by a FlexJobs researcher and is offered by a reputable employer.
Here’s a list of companies that have data entry jobs from home.

Micro Sites / Crowdsourcing Sites / Microjobs
Micro sites or crowdsourcing sites connect workers and employers who have small online tasks they need someone to do. And you can do those micro tasks or short jobs and get paid for doing them.
Crowdsourcing sites are free to join. Crowdsourcing is a good way to make extra money. You can do those tasks whenever you have a bit of extra time. You can work when you want to and choose the jobs you want to do.
Some micro tasks pay more than others and some can be done quicker than others. The pay varies depending on the jobs and the skills required but typically, you’ll make less than minimum wage.
Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is the best-known micro-task site. They have tons of jobs, including typing, data entry, surveys, website rating, and more.
Clickworker is one of the better micro-working sites. The small tasks or micro jobs you can do at ClickWorker include online research, doing surveys, writing product descriptions, proofreading, categorizing websites, and more. Many jobs only take seconds or minutes to complete.
You can also work on your cell phone with their ClickWorker app. Clickworker members also have access to UHRS, the Universal Human Relevance System that has plenty of work.
The tasks that are available to you may vary based on your qualification assessment, previous work assessments, education, language skills, and interests. Depending on your profile and qualifications you may be offered some projects and may be excluded from others.
Some poeple reported that they are making an average of $9 per hour on Clickworker while others make over $10 per hour.
Microworkers
https://www.microworkers.com/
Tasks you can do at Microworkers include anything from surveys, YouTube commenting, writing blog posts, transcription, data categorization, matching and tagging, social media likes, shares and comments, data mining, content comparison, content moderation, surveys, and more.
The minimum pay rate is $10 per hour but employers can pay more.
You can make extra money with Microworkers but there aren’t enough jobs available every day to earn a part-time or full-time income.
Catcha Input Sites
Captcha solving is a very easy way to make extra money online. But they pay very little money. Captcha sites pay you to solve captcha puzzles. You earn money for each correctly entered Captcha.
Captchas are usually images that contain distorted text that you need to answer before getting into a website to indicate that you are not a robot. Captchas help prevent automated bots from posting large numbers of messages, automating certain jobs, and doing some suspicious activities.
I don’t recommend doing this type of work. It’s easy work but you’ll earn little and I’m not sure about the legalities involved. There are better ways to make money online. But if you want to learn more about solving captchas, you can check out this post on Quora.

Transcription Jobs
If you're looking for typing jobs, you may also want to consider transcription.
Transcription is basically typing what's being said on an audio or video recording. Transcription jobs require a bit more skills than data entry jobs but they also pay more.
You don't need any special training or degree to do transcription jobs for beginners but you need good English and grammar skills.
I have a ton of information on this site about transcription. Here are some transcription resources:

Captioning Jobs
When captioning, you'll work with video files. Like transcription, you are typing what is spoken and add subtitles/closed captioning to the video. Closed captions, also referred to as subtitles, appear as text at the bottom of your screen and represent the speech between characters on the video or TV program.
Here is the description of captioning by 3PlayMedia: “Captioning is a process that involves dividing transcript text into chucks, known as “caption frames,” and time-coding each frame to synchronize with the audio of a video. The output of captioning are captions which are typically located at the bottom of a video screen. Captions allow viewers to follow along with the audio and video or captions interchangeably.”
Companies providing captioning services and offering captioning work from home:
In addition to transcription jobs, Rev also has jobs adding captions to video and creating foreign subtitles.
Rev's subtitle services add English subtitles, also known as captions, to videos easily and quickly. By adding subtitles to your videos, viewers can enjoy the content with the sound turned off or in situations with loud noise interference. Rev mentions that they have 50,000+ professionals who add subtitles to videos 24/7.
3Play Media provides closed captions, transcription and translation. Check their jobs page to learn about current openings.
