   Open a MT Turk account at https://requester.mturk.com

• Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a crowdsourcing marketplace that makes it easier for individuals and businesses to outsource their jobs to a distributed workforce who can perform these tasks virtually.
• In addition to transcription jobs, you can also get proofreading, data entry and writing work through Amazon MTurk.
• It's easy to sign up at https://requester.mturk.com. Click on Create an Account, enter your email address and follow the prompts to complete your registration and accept the Amazon Mechanical Turk Participation Agreement.
• Companies that provide transcription work through MTurk include CastingWords, SpeechInk and more.
• Your home page at MTurk will show a list of current jobs. You can also use their search bar to search for specific jobs.

2. CastingWords

• You can work directly from their site or through Mechanical Turk.
• There is no application process with Mturk’s CastingWords and you can get started right away just by creating an account.
• When working through the CastingWords site, payments are made through Paypal once a week. Mturk payments are deposited to your bank account and you can request your pay at any time if you have at least $1 in your Mturk account. Mturk takes 20% so you get 20% more if working through the CastingWords web site.
• They’ll hire freelancers in most countries, as long as you have a Paypal account.
• CastingWords offers transcription jobs for newbies and does NOT require any previous transcription experience.
• There is no test to qualify but there will be limited jobs available to you until you submit work and get graded.
• It is a good place to get started in transcription if you’re inexperienced. Workers report that the company provides good support.
• As a new transcriber for CastingWords, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up but you can move up to better jobs quickly. Pay is low but varies widely based on a number of factors, including what type of job you do, what level you have reached, and what grade you earn. Pay ranges between 8.5 cents and a bit over one dollar per audio minute.
• They have different categories of jobs, including grading, editing, and transcription. Within each category, jobs at different skill levels have different pay rates.
• CastingWords offers bonuses for good quality work and these bonuses often put you over the $1 per audio minute. Editing jobs and most transcription jobs are bonus-based, and the better you do, the more you get paid.

3. SpeechInk

• SpeechInk's transcription jobs are done through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. 
• When you see a job on MTurk that you want to do, first check to see if it requires a qualification. Many SpeechInk jobs require certain qualifications. For example, you may have to agree to the terms of their Confidentiality Agreement. 
• You will need to qualify to do the job by taking a brief rating test. Your rating is initially zero, but you can quickly move it up by taking the rating test. Before taking the test, review their Quick Start guide and transcription guidelines.
• Once you submit your first job, your rating will be updated and you'll receive an email telling you your rating. It's important that you click on the link in the email to review their feedback on your work. If your rating is excellent, you can then do real jobs. If not, you'll need to retake the test and improve your rating before you can qualify to do real jobs.
• Get bonuses. SpeechInk rates the quality of each transcription, and uses your rating to determine your bonus. The better your work, the more you can make! And after each transcription, they'll send you an email to show you what you did wrong.

• You can withdraw funds at any time.
• Scribie pays $5 to $25 per audio hour and you can earn bonuses too.
• The earnings are credited to your Scribie.com account once your submission is reviewed. It can be withdrawn to your PayPal account anytime. You have to submit a withdrawal request. There is no minimum withdrawal limit. The funds will be sent to your PayPal account in 1 business day.
• Scribie is popular with beginning freelancers.

5. Quicktate

• Quicktate doesn’t require any experience for general transcription work and is one of the easiest transcription companies to get accepted with.
• This company offers general, legal transcription and medical transcription work.
• The majority of files are voicemail messages that are easy to transcribe.

6. Crowdsurf

• You get paid within an hour after doing a job through Work Market, a freelancer manager system. Payment methods include PayPal, direct deposit and a Work Market card.
• CrowdSurf is a community of transcribers that create high quality video captions so that deaf, hard of hearing, and second language viewers can enjoy online media.
• You don't need any previous transcription experience to provide transcripts and video captions.
• They provide all the training and support you need to get started earning money from home. You can also check your transcription feedback on your work history dashboard to see how you’re doing.
• Each job is called a “hit” and is less than 30 seconds long so it's great fill-in work.
• The pay is low and similar to the pay at Scribie, CastingWords and TranscribeMe but depends on how easy the jobs are, if they're paying bonuses, and how fast you can type.
• Important note: You can only take their qualification test once so be sure to only take it when you're ready.

7. Allegis Transcription

• Allegis specializes in insurance transcription.
• They pay weekly and on time.
• You must live in the US.
• Previous transcription experience is not required. They have positions for new and experienced transcriptionists.
• The pay is higher for experienced transcriptionists.  They pay per page and the pay is higher than what other transcription companies pay who accept beginners.
• Their coaches will guide new contractors.  This is truly unique in the industry and makes it a great place to get started in transcription and to learn while making money. Workers have confirmed that they provide guidance. They also provide helpful videos. The coaches and staff members are friendly, helpful, and quick to reply to any questions.
• They have plenty of work available.
• Hours are flexible but they do require a 100 page minimum per week which is about 10 hours/week.

8. Appenscribe

Appenscribe pays every two weeks through Paypal but I'm including it here because it's one of the best companies to work for when you're totally new at transcription. It’s a popular transcription company for beginners that receives positive reviews. Workers report that it’s a much better company to work for than Quicktate or Scribie and the pay is better. Work is sporadic but they have busy times when there is lots of work available.

Appenscribe does NOT require previous experience. Their entry level transcription position only requires good grammar and spelling skills, plus 75 WPM typing and use of a foot pedal.

• Hires beginning transcribers worldwide.
• They have transcription work in many languages. You need to be fluent in the language you want to work in. You can get more work if you are fluent in multiple languages.
• They provide a Training Module.
• They pay about $0.005 per word on average but pay varies depending on difficulty, length and type of work.
• Workers report that you can expect a rate of about $0.005 per word transcribed (close to the industry standard). Some say that they pay a few Australian pennies per transcribed line but the amount depends on the project you’re working on. Lines can vary from 2 to 15 words and are often short so the pay can add up quickly.
• They would like you to work a minimum of 10 hours per week during busy times. You can claim work any time when available.
• Most workers are saying that they average $10 or more per hour. Some people report making $25+/hour when they get clear audio.
• You’ll get bonuses if you transcribe a certain amount of volume and provide quality work.

• Hires English transcriptionists, spanish transcriptionists, subtitlers and captioners.
• Transcription work includes corporate, legal, entertainment and academic transcription.
• Receive training, feedback, and coaching. Collaborate with like-minded others and learn from the best.
• They don’t guarantee a specific amount of work but say that their top transcriptionist makes anywhere from $250- $950 per week.

• Pay starts at $20 per audio hour for general transcription plus potential bonuses dependent on speed and accuracy. Transcriptionists with specialized medical and legal backgrounds are paid a higher rate.

• The pay is low but higher than similar companies that accept beginning transcriptionists and require no experience and no commitment. They claim to have the industry’s best rates and top monthly earnings.

11. Rev

• Rev provides transcribing, captioning, subtitling and translation jobs.
• You can work from anywhere in the world as long as you have a Paypal account.
• Transcription pays $0.36 – $0.65 per audio minute and each job lists the pay.
• Captioning pays $0.45 – $0.75  per video minute.
• Subtitling pays $1.50 – $3.00 per video minute.
• The company says they'll provide feedback and coaching but many workers complain about unfair ratings.
• The test appears to be easy but if you don’t pass the test you have to wait 45 days to retake it.

12. GoTranscript

• They pay transcribers up to $0.60 per audio or video minute.
• You don’t need to have any transcription experience but you need to have good English skills.
• There is no minimum typing speed and you can take around 6 hours to transcribe 10 minutes of audio or video.
• They are located in the UK but hire worldwide.
• You must pass their test. You'll need to transcribe a video with a non-native speaker. The audio quality is poor. They do this to test your ability to transcribe files with strong accents. The video is not difficult to transcribe. And if you fail the test, you can redo it.
• The company mentions that they are supportive, resolve issues promptly, and give regular feedback and that you can learn from their team. (I don't know if that's true or not.)
• They don’t always have jobs available, but during busy times they prefer freelancers who are able to work at least 10 hours per week.
• You can use their system to do the test and you don’t need to install any software.
• Workers report that they always pay on time, provide an easy system to work with, and are a good company to work with.
