TranscribeMe is a newbie-friendly transcription company that has transcription jobs for beginners.
- No prior transcription experience required.
- Hires transcribers worldwide if they can get paid with Paypal and have good English skills (if transcribing in English).
- Transcribers must have a strong command of the English language and grammar; be able to recognize American English accents/speech; and have a decent typing speed.
- It’s easy to sign up, fill out a short form, pass their tests, get accepted and get started.
- You have to pass a short grammar test and transcribe a short audio. After passing the tests, you will be put on a waiting list to get work. The waiting time can be up to 6 weeks as they’re inundated with new transcribers. You can retake the test a few times if you fail.
- You don’t need to have transcription software – just log in and type online.
- You don't need to have special equipment.
- You need to use Google Chrome (free).

- TranscribeMe! has English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Chinese and Japanese transcription jobs (I’m focusing here on English transcription).
- You typically transcribe short, easy audio files between 8 and 60 seconds long.
- Very flexible hours. You can work whenever you want.
- An informative online training program will introduce the Transcriptionist Portal and will take you through their style guide.
- After taken an exam to prove that you can accurately transcribe audio and follow their style guidelines, you’ll be given short chunks of audio to transcribe.
- Using their interface, you upload your finished transcription to an editor who either accepts your work or sends it back to you for corrections.
Pay
- Pay starts at $15-$22 per audio hour for general transcription plus potential bonuses which are dependent on speed and accuracy.
- Transcriptionists with specialized medical and legal backgrounds are paid a higher rate.
- The pay is low but higher than similar companies that accept beginning transcriptionists and require no experience and no commitment. They claim to have the industry’s best rates and top monthly earnings at $2,200 (average monthly earnings are $250).
- You get paid weekly in US dollars through PayPal but need to reach $10 minimum to claim your pay.

- TranscribeMe is very newbie friendly and is similar to Quicktate or Scribie that also offers transcription jobs for beginners.
- TranscribeMe offers the most competitive pay scale compared to similar companies that has transcription jobs for beginners.
- You start out with low earnings but have several opportunities for promotions within a few months. You can move up fairly quickly from transcriber to editor, reviewer and lead quality assurance agent.
- Most people find the tests easy while some find them difficult. People’s opinion will depend on their experience but they seem to be easier to get started than others.
- Flexible hours. Work as much or as little as you want.
- The amount of work varies but TranscribeMe offers a relatively steady work stream. You get paid in US dollars. Some workers complain about lack of work and this is a common complaint about most companies that has transcription jobs for beginners. The easy work seems to be gone fast because a large number of people join their easy tests. But they have special projects that you can quality for that have countless hours of work. And they say that they will get you continuous work if you want to commit to a certain number of hours each week and provide quality work. There is also a lot of work if you can transcribe different accents (you can take tests for different accents).
- Many people mention that they provide good support, answer questions, help you when you have issues, and help with mistakes while others complain about the lack of support. Complaints seem to come from people who failed the tests and didn't follow their style guide. My guess is that the people who provide quality work are getting support but that the company doesn’t want to waste time with people who don’t have the skills to pass the test and don’t follow their style guide.
- They promise training but workers say they don’t provide training.
- Many transcripts seem to get rejected and you don’t get paid for rejected transcripts. Be cautious about this but keep in mind that anyone can apply and their tests are easy so some people will get rejected for low quality work.
- Overall, this is a great company for beginners. You can develop your skills, gain insight into various industries, boost your resume, and grow into higher paying projects and positions.
