“No experience” means that you don't necessarily need to have previous transcription experience. But you'll need to have good typing, English, grammar, and listening skills. 

You need transcription experience to land good-paying transcription jobs.

The transcription companies I mention here have transcription jobs for beginners.  They do NOT require any formal education or previous transcription experience.

Here are some of their requirements:

• Most transcription companies require that you have excellent grammar skills.
• You need to follow their instructions and their style guide.
• Most allow you to use the free ExpressScribe software and some provide their own software. You can download the free version of Express Scribe from https://www.nch.com.au/scribe/index.html. 

You'll be working from home as an independent contractor. A major perk of freelance transcription work is its flexibility. You accept jobs when you want to and you can work as much or as little as you want.

It's important to understand that these transcription jobs from home do not pay per work hour. They do not pay for the time it takes you to complete the work. Instead, they pay per recorded minute transcribed.

Depending on your speed, it will take anywhere from 3 to 6 minutes to transcribe 1 audio minute. In other words, it will take you 3 to 6 hours to transcribe a 1-hour audio recording. That means that if the pay is $30 to $180 per recorded hour, you can make anywhere from $5 to $60 per work hour.

Working on some of those transcription jobs for beginners will give you a chance to gain experience while making some money. And after getting more transcription experience, you'll be able to move on to better-paying transcription jobs.

According to ZipRecruiter, the average salary for general transcriptionist is $39,762/year and can be as high as $77,500/year. 

Working beginner jobs is one way to get some transcription experience. But most beginner jobs will pay low fees. Some companies offer bonuses and opportunities for advancement.

25 Companies that have transcription jobs for beginners

No experience is required to work for those companies but you have to pass a test to show that you can do the work.

• These transcription jobs are Independent Contractor (IC) positions. You work for yourself. You can work from home at your own schedule.
• You will often be put on a waiting list and they'll contact you when they have transcription work available.
• Those companies pay very little but working for them will help you build up some experience in transcription.

1. Amazon MTurk
Open an MT Turk account at https://requester.mturk.com

• Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a crowdsourcing marketplace that makes it easy for businesses to outsource their jobs to a distributed workforce who can perform these tasks virtually.
• In addition to transcription jobs, Amazon MTurk also has proofreading, data entry, and writing jobs.
• It's easy to sign up at https://requester.mturk.com. Click on Create an Account, enter your email address, and follow the prompts to complete your Requester account registration. When prompted, type your mailing address and accept the Amazon Mechanical Turk Participation Agreement.
• Companies that provide transcription work through MTurk include CastingWords, SpeechInk, and others.
• Your home page at MTurk will show a list of current jobs. You can click on this list to find jobs or use their search bar to search for specific jobs.

2. CastingWords

• CastingWords offers transcription jobs for newbies and does NOT require any previous transcription experience.
• You can work directly from their site or through Mechanical Turk.
• There is no application process with Mturk’s CastingWords and you can start right away just by creating an account.
• There is no test to qualify but fewer jobs will be available to you until you submit work and get graded.
• CastingWords is a good place to get started in transcription if you’re inexperienced. Workers report that the company provides good support.
• When working through the CastingWords site, you'll get paid through Paypal once a week. Mturk payments are deposited to your bank account and you can request your payment at any time if you have at least $1 in your Mturk account. Mturk takes 20% so you get 20% more if working through the CastingWords website.
• They’ll hire freelancers in most countries, as long as you have a Paypal account.
• As a new transcriber for CastingWords, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up but you can move up to better jobs quickly.
• Pay is low but varies widely based on what type of job you do, what level you have reached, and what grade you earn, and ranges between 8.5 cents and a bit over one dollar per audio minute.
• They have different categories of jobs, including grading, editing, and transcription. Within each category, jobs at different skill levels have different pay rates.
• CastingWords offers bonuses for good quality work and these bonuses often put you over the $1 per audio minute. Editing jobs and most transcription jobs are bonus-based, and the better you do, the more you get paid.

3. SpeechInk

• SpeechInk's transcription jobs are done through Amazon's Mechanical Turk. You need to have an existing Amazon account or create one.
• Many SpeechInk jobs require certain qualifications. For example, you may have to agree to the terms of their Confidentiality Agreement. For some jobs, you might need to take a brief test (Rating Qualification) to show that you have mastered job requirements. So, when you see a job on MTurk that you want to do, first check to see if it requires any qualifications. 
• Next, you will need to qualify to do the job by taking a test. Your rating is initially zero, but you can quickly move it up by taking the rating test. Before taking the test, review their Quick Start guide and transcription guidelines.
• Once you submit your first job, your rating will be updated and you'll receive an email telling you your rating. It's important that you click on the link in the email you receive to review their feedback. If your rating is excellent, you can then do real jobs. If not, you'll need to retake the test and improve your rating before you qualify to do real jobs.
• Get bonuses. SpeechInk rates the quality of each transcription and uses your rating to determine your bonus. The better your work, the more you can make! They'll send you an email after each transcription to show you what you did wrong.

4. Scribie

• You can work from anywhere in the world as long as you have a verified Paypal account.
• They prefer people with fast typing speed.
• You must pass their transcription test which may include strong accents. To pass the test, you will need a fast typing speed, and good listening and comprehension skills in English, including American, British, Australian, and Indian-accented English.
• You need the latest version of Firefox, Chrome, or Safari web browser.
• You need to use a headset (a foot pedal is not required). Below are some popular headsets for transcription work.

• Scribie pays $5 to $25 per audio hour and you can earn bonuses too.
• The earnings are credited to your Scribie.com account once your submission is reviewed. You can withdraw it to your PayPal account anytime. There is no minimum withdrawal limit. 
• Scribie is popular with beginning freelance transcriptionists.

• Quicktate does NOT require any experience for general transcription work.
• Quicktate is one of the easiest transcription companies to get accepted with.
• Quicktate offers general, legal transcription, and medical transcription work. The majority of files are voicemail messages that are easy to transcribe.

6. SpeechPad

• Speechpad is the best transcription company for people with no transcription experience. No experience is needed but you need to pass a test. You can retake the test if you don’t pass.
• They employ transcribers in English-speaking countries only and the majority of their transcribers are located in the US. 
• You must have a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.
• The pay is better than similar companies and the audio is typically good quality.  Transcription jobs pay from $0.25/min (or $15 per audio hour) for entry-level work to $1.00/min for work that requires more experience.
• Captioning jobs pay between $.30/min and $1.00/min. You can get gradually promoted to doing rush jobs and to spot-check jobs if you're providing quality transcripts.
• Spot check jobs pay up to $1.50/audio minute.
• Workers mention that many transcription jobs range from $0.25 per audio minute up to $0.75 which is much more than some similar sites pay. They pay twice a week through Paypal and they always pay on time.

UPDATE 12/26/19: It looks like Speechpad has changed its requirements and is now requiring applicants to have transcription experience. I found the following notice on their site: “Due to the overwhelming interest in becoming a part of our worker pool, we are only able to consider applicants who have verifiable transcription experience. At this time, all positions have been filled. You may send your resume, driver's license, or govt/state-issued ID, and valid phone number to worker@speechpad.com in case we have openings throughout the year. Please keep in mind that only applicants with verifiable experience and the proper documentation will be considered.”

7. CrowdSurf

• CrowdSurf is a community of transcribers that create high-quality video captions so that deaf, hard of hearing and second-language viewers can enjoy online media.
• You don't need any previous transcription experience to provide transcripts and video captions.
• They provide all the training and support you need to get started earning money from home. You can also check your transcription feedback on your work history dashboard to see how you’re doing.
• Each job is called a “hit” and is less than 30 seconds long so it's great fill-in work.
• The pay is low and similar to the pay at Scribie, CastingWords, and TranscribeMe and depends on how easy the jobs are, if they're paying bonuses, and how fast you can type.
• You get paid within an hour after doing a job through Work Market, a freelancer management system. Payment methods include PayPal, direct deposit, and a Work Market card.
• Important note: You can only take their qualification test once so be sure to only take it when you're ready.

8. Allegis Transcription

• Allegis specializes in insurance transcription.
• They pay weekly and on time.
• You must live in the US.
• Previous transcription experience is not required. They have positions for new and experienced transcriptionists.
• The pay is higher for experienced transcriptionists.  They pay per page and the pay is higher than what other transcription companies pay who accept beginners.
• Their coaches will guide new contractors.  This is truly unique in the industry and makes it a great place to get started in transcription and to learn while making money. Workers have confirmed that they provide guidance. They also provide helpful videos. The coaches and staff members are friendly, helpful, and quick to reply to any questions.
• They have plenty of work available.
• Hours are flexible but they do require a 100-page minimum per week which is about 10 hours/per week.

• They say they pay higher rates than their competitors, Rev, Transcribeme, Scribie, and many others.
• Daily Transcription only hires in the US.
• Beginners and professionals are welcome to apply.
• Hires English transcriptionists, Spanish transcriptionists, subtitlers, and captioners.
• Transcription work includes corporate, legal, entertainment, and academic transcription.
• Receive training, feedback, and coaching. Collaborate with like-minded others and learn from the best.
• They don’t guarantee a specific amount of work per day/week but say that their top transcriptionist makes anywhere from $250- $950 per week.

10. TranscribeMe

• You get paid weekly in US dollars through PayPal but need to reach a $10 minimum to claim your payment.
• Pay starts at $20 per audio hour for general transcription plus potential bonuses dependent on speed and accuracy. Transcriptionists with specialized medical and legal backgrounds are paid a higher rate.

• Hires transcribers worldwide if they can get paid with Paypal and have good English skills (if transcribing in English).
• TranscribeMe! has English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Chinese, and Japanese transcription jobs.
• You typically transcribe short, easy audio files between 8 and 60 seconds long.
• The pay is low but higher than similar companies that accept beginning transcriptionists and TranscribeMe! requires no experience and no commitment. They claim to have the industry’s best rates and top monthly earnings.

11. Rev

• Pays weekly.
• Rev provides transcribing, captioning, subtitling, and translation jobs.
• You can work from anywhere in the world as long as you have a Paypal account.
• Transcription pays $0.36 – $0.65 per audio minute and each job lists the pay.
• Captioning pays $0.45 – $0.75  per video minute.
• Subtitling pays $1.50 – $3.00 per video minute.
• The company says it'll provide feedback and coaching but many workers complain about unfair ratings.
• The test appears to be easy but if you don’t pass the test you have to wait 45 days to retake it.

12. GoTranscript

• They pay weekly with Paypal and Payoneer.
• They pay transcribers up to $0.60 per audio or video minute.
• You don’t need to have any transcription experience but you need to have good English skills.
• There is no minimum typing speed and you can take around 6 hours to transcribe 10 minutes of audio or video.
• They are located in the UK but hire worldwide.
• You must pass their test. You'll need to transcribe a video with a non-native speaker. The audio quality is poor. They do this to test your ability to transcribe files with strong accents. The video is not difficult to transcribe. And if you fail the test, you can redo it.
• The company mentions that they are supportive, resolve issues promptly, give regular feedback and that you can learn from their team. (I don't know if that's true or not.)
• They don’t always have jobs available, but during busy times they prefer freelancers who are able to work at least 10 hours per week.
• You can use their system to do the test and you don’t need to install any software.
• Workers report that they always pay on time, provide an easy system to work with, and are a good company to work with.

• Their tests are NOT easy and consist of three short audio files, including a focus group. Focus groups are more difficult, involve multiple people, and people may be talking at the same time. 
• The most important key to getting hired is to follow their test guidelines and produce accurate transcripts. Your accuracy is more important than your speed to pass the tests.
• Tigerfish provides general and legal transcription. Work includes transcribing focus groups, interviews, law enforcement, and documentaries.
• You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
• They are looking for people with a broad range of interests and education and will ask for information about your educational background, relevant experience, and interests.
• They recommend using a high-quality headset and foot pedal.

Express Scribe Transcription Bundle: Pedal, Professional Software, and Headset

• You can use Express Scribe to do the test but you’ll need to purchase Start-Stop Power Play when you get hired.
• You’ll need a Windows computer.
• My research indicates they are paying around $.005 per word transcribed. Unlike most other transcription companies, they pay by words transcribed — not by audio time.
• They often offer time and a half for rush work.
• Their pay is significantly higher than companies like Quicktate and Scribie but a bit lower than other transcription companies.
• One person mentioned that she was making about $15 per typing hour or about $60 per audio hour. Most beginners will likely make less until their speed increases.
• I recommend acquiring some transcription experience and building up your speed before applying with them.

• The pay is higher than average.
• If you're fluent in Spanish or some other languages, you will be able to receive higher pay than English transcribers.
• It's a good company to work for but if you're a total beginner, I recommend trying some of the other companies mentioned here that have easier tests.

• General typist jobs: Must have 1+ years of transcription in an office environment within the last five years.
  UPDATE 12/26/19: They used to accept people with 1 year of word processing experience but are now saying that general office, data entry and accounting experience are not sufficient.
• Requirements are steeper for legal transcription jobs. Legal transcriptionists can earn $400 to $3,400 a month. They must have experience, pass a typing test, and be a US or Canadian legal resident.

• You must pass a series of proficiency tests to demonstrate your transcription skills before getting work as a contract transcriptionist/editor.
• You need to be able to provide expert transcribing services and provide a quick turnaround.
• You can make $10-$30 per hour depending on your typing speed and accuracy but $10-$20 is more realistic.
• NOTE: Some sites have mentioned that this company accepts beginners but the tests you need to take to work for them as a transcription editor are not easy.

NOTE about transcription pay: 

Transcription companies like those mentioned here can help you get started in transcription when you don't have transcription experience. However, transcription companies that accept beginners without experience don't pay much. But after getting some experience you'll be able to get plenty of good-paying transcription jobs.

You're not limited to working for transcription companies to get transcription jobs.

You can find transcription jobs at freelance sites, promote your services on freelance sites, and when you're ready you'll want to work directly with your own clients.

More tips on getting transcription jobs

Although having transcription experience or having a certification in medical or legal transcription will give you an advantage (better pay and more job opportunities) over people who don't, it’s not a requirement for some companies.

Of course, not all transcription companies will recruit people who don’t have transcription experience but some companies are willing to give transcription jobs to beginners as long as they meet their qualifications and pass their tests.

Transcription companies look for reliable professionals who can follow instructions and deliver transcripts accurately and timely. That's why it's important to follow instructions exactly when applying for transcription jobs and taking transcription tests.

Before taking any tests to get transcription jobs, read my article, How to Pass Transcription Tests

• You will typically have to fill in an application form and take one or more tests to prove your qualifications.
• All companies require excellent typing, English, grammar, and listening skills. Some companies will let you get started with a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute while others require a higher speed. Remember that accuracy is even more important than speed.
• Some companies will want to see your resume. Emphasize your skills on the application and in your resume. Mention your typing, English, and grammar skills and any qualifications, experience, and benefits you can bring to the transcription job. Mention any relevant industry knowledge.
• Native English-speaking people will typically have an advantage. Some companies will recruit people from different countries while others will only recruit people who live in the US. Many transcription companies will only recruit people from English-speaking countries. They feel that native-English speakers from the US, UK, Canada, or Australia can better understand different accents, dialects, slang, jargon, and culture and country-specific nuances. General transcription can be more challenging for non-native speakers to learn because it covers a wide variety of topics and vocabulary that will vary with each industry.

Search for transcription companies online, check their requirements and apply with transcription companies who accept new transcriptionists with no transcription experience.

Freelance sites & freelance job sites

Another way to get transcription jobs is by bidding for work on freelance sites. Here are some tips to get transcription work through freelance sites:

• Only bid on projects you are qualified for.
• Mention that you are qualified for transcription work and are looking for opportunities to demonstrate your expertise and establish your reputation as a skilled transcriptionist.
• Bidding low will increase your chances of being selected and getting the experience you need to get better-paid transcription jobs in the future.

Job sites provide you with the opportunity to gain freelance jobs. The downside to many freelance job sites is that they often don't pay well. However, if you're looking to build your portfolio and your experience then the fee is secondary. You can quickly get the experience that you need through freelance sites.
