how to work from home as a legal transcriptionist

Legal transcriptionists often work from home today.

Digital recorders, transcription software, and the Internet have made it easy to record audio and video and send digital files to offsite transcriptionists.

A wide variety of opportunities are available today to work from home as a legal transcriptionist. I’m mentioning just a few here.

  1. Work from home as a legal transcriptionist for one or more transcription companies as an independent contractor. Working for a transcription company is the easiest way to get into legal transcription and many people get started that way. When applying for transcription work at a transcription company, you will typically have to submit an application, provide your credentials and pass a transcription test to prove that you have the skills to provide accurate transcripts.
  2. Work for a transcription company from home as a transcription editor. A transcription editor edits transcripts that are generated by other transcriptionists and by voice recognition to ensure that the transcripts are accurate and error-free. You’ll typically start working as a transcriptionist to prove yourself before getting promoted to work as a transcription editor.
  3. Work from home as an employee of a business, corporation, or organization. Usually, you’ll work in a company’s office for a while before they’ll allow you to telecommute and work at home and the majority of people working from home are independent contractors.
  4. Get additional general and business transcription work. Having some legal training and knowing legal terminology and formats will help you get additional general and business transcription work. For example, insurance companies and police departments prefer transcriptionists who are familiar with legal and/or medical terminology.
  5. Get academic transcription work that involves legal topics. Legal academic transcription includes transcription of audio, video, and podcasts of courses, lectures by law professors, dissertations, and seminars.
  6. Work from home as a freelance legal transcriptionist (independent contractor), get your own clients, and work directly with clients. You can do a few free transcripts for non-profits and people you know to build up a track record and acquire testimonials. Also, getting some gigs from freelance sites is a good way to build a reputation for accuracy and reliability. After you’ve built up some experience, you can then go after your own clients and get higher pay for your work.
  7. Run a large transcription business and recruit other transcriptionists to work for you. This is how you make the big money in transcription. You can start small with a few transcriptionists and expand gradually into a larger operation.

Home-based legal transcriptionists can make a good, steady income and are paid better than medical transcriptionists today. Of course, the amount of money you will earn will depend on your skills, speed, reputation, the quality and accuracy of your work, your rates, and the industry and clients you’re working for. Transcriptionists report making between $20,000 and $60,000 per year.

Legal transcription is a great field to get into that offers a large variety of work. And the need for legal transcriptionists will likely continue to grow.
